"Thelonious would have loved what Gary is doing - really learning the music and then doing his own thing with it."

A great website from Gary Wittner, an acknowledged authority on the music and life of Thelonious Monk, Gary has presented concert/lectures on Monk at many universities and clubs throughout the USA and Europe and has recently released a CD where he is joined by Howard Johnson (tuba, contra-bass clarinet) and Bruce Ditmas (drums). It includes 3 compositions by Thelonious Monk, 7 originals and 3 folk/blues arrangements for solo guitar, performed in a style Gary refers to as "Big Bill Broonzy meets Thelonious Monk." This combines the right hand guitar style of the rural blues with more angular aspects of Monk's music.

Gary's first book "Thelonious Monk for Guitar", published by the Hal Leonard Corp. was released internationally in 1999. The book includes 11 compositions notated for guitar transcribed from the original recordings with specific performance notes for guitarists. There's a listing of recorded sources for each transcription and includes a selected discography.

The CD and/or the Book can be ordered directly from Gary through his website. Highly recommended.

New CD ROM Thomas Fitterling's book lists a very interesting CD-ROM produced by Word & Vision of Zurich.
"Likely to be the first interactive jazz CD-ROM. You enter an imaginary jazz club with Monk playing there. On the wall there are posters on which you can click for all kinds of information about Monk's life, music, recordings and related themes such as 'Monk and the jazz community', and 'New York as the jazz capital of the world'."
The project has been approved by Monk's family, and should come to market during 1998. The CD will contain previously unreleased radio broadcasts; live video footage; biographical data and much more.
