Steptoe and Son are in the 'Rag and Bone' business. The television show was the most popular comedy in UK TV history - it regularly had an audience of over 20,000,000 viewers, and among the reasons for this was the ability of the show to combine humour with a dramatic poignancy. In fact The Times of London reviewer wrote "Steptoe and Son virtually obliterates the division between drama and comedy." Albert Steptoe, much to Harold's chagrin is actually the "Son" on the sign outside the building, the sign originally being painted in Harold's granddad's time. Their relationship has gone downhill ever since. The series started with a Comedy Playhouse production titled "The Offer" in January 1962, and the first of the regular series started in June 1962. It was on BBC-TV for four seasons, up to 1965. These shows were broadcast in black & white. The comedy returned to television in 1970, it was now called appropriately enough 'The Return of Steptoe & Son', and was broadcast for another four seasons, this time in colour. Two Christmas specials were also produced. Several video tapes have been released by the BBC, usually with three episodes on each tape. There were also two movies released. In addition to the video tapes, the BBC has also produced some two hour audio tapes, with four shows on each. The audio tapes are based on the TV shows, but some of them have been adapted for radio broadcast. 'Steptoe and Son' was the original for the U.S. television series 'Sanford and Son'.
