The Bracknell Connection was commissioned by South Hill Park for the Second Bracknell Jazz festival with the aid of the Arts Council of Great Britain, and first performed in July 1976.

The Bracknell Jazz Festival was started in 1975 by South Hill Park, which is a community arts centre serving Bracknell and the surrounding district, and is situated in a Victorian mansion house set in 15 acres of landscaped grounds. The Festival is held in marquees on the lawn of the house, as well as in various performance spaces in the building itself, and has recently established itself as one of the highlights of the British jazz calendar. The keynote of the Festival is to provide the jazz scene - listeners and musicians alike - with a weekend of the best in British jazz, spiced with visiting Americans, in an informal, relaxed atmosphere.

Stan Tracey played in a masterly fashion, backing solos with fragments of the theme which gradually took over - throwing in an unaccompanied duet for tenors - massing the five horns with part writing that Ellington might have been proud of - and always framing the solo work within marvellous themes and structures. The sort of evening that makes one say 'if only it had been recorded'.
Well, it was!
